Free Vaira account: How can I use the measurement with the Vaira App?

In this article, we explain how you can take practical measurements with the free Vaira account.

Before you start: If you do not yet have a free Vaira account, have not yet installed the app or do not know how to log into the Vaira Office or the app, read this article first: How can I use Vaira for free?

You can find the instructions for working with Vaira Office on your PC here.

Please note: The experience with the augmented reality measurement (especially: accuracy, stability) depends on the smartphone or tablet you use. Find out more about recommended devices here: Recommended smartphones for surveying with the Vaira app.

The workflows in your free Vaira account

We have created two workflows for you in the free account. One is for surveying and the other is for photo documentation. You cannot edit these workflows in the free version and you cannot create any other workflows, fields, etc.

Below we explain how you can use the surveying workflow. You can find the instructions for the photodocumentation workflow here: Free Vaira account: How can I use the photo documentation with the Vaira app?

Using the measurement workflow in the Vaira app

If you have not yet created a process in Vaira Office, you will be greeted by an extra screen with a small graphic. If you have, you will already see processes listed here. However, this does not change the further procedure.

Create a process in the Vaira app

Open the Vaira app on your smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android) and log in if you haven't already done so. If you don't know how to do this, you can find out here: How can I log in to Vaira Office?

You are now in the process list, which is probably still empty at the moment. We would like to change that. Click on the plus symbol at the bottom right.

This will show you the two workflows you can use to create a process. We are using the Freemium - Smartphone measurement workflow here.

A process is created automatically, which you can view in your process list with basic information.

Let's start processing the task!

Click on it to edit it further.

You will first be taken to the dashboard. This will probably look even emptier for you, as you have not yet filled in any fields in Vaira Office. If you have, it should look like ours. This dashboard fills up interactively as soon as you have filled in the fields in this process. More on this later.

Good to know: At the top, you have the option to switch to chat as well as tasks. In the free version of Vaira, however, you only work alone in the company, so you won't be able to use the chat function here. 🙁

If you want more conversation, you can try it out in our free 14-day full version .

But now you want to work, so click on Tasks at the top next to Dashboard.

You will now see a single task consisting of the Measurement form. You can already see a green tick here, as none of our fields are mandatory, so the task could even be submitted empty.

Click on the Surveying box to access the fields.

Here you can now see the fields that you can fill in. At the top is the special field Create sketch. If you click on this, the AR measurement will start. More on this later.

It is best to first enter the address as simple text and then you can select an execution date in the calendar. The Operation type field is a field that you cannot edit. It is a read-onlyfield, so you can only read it but not edit it.

As soon as you have done all this, you will also find the card view in the dashboard along with the information you have entered. But now we start the exciting part: the AR survey!

Let's start the survey!

The structure of the survey does not differ from the Vaira license version.

Tip: Since the measurement process is largely the same as the normal measurement in the Vaira license version, you can also refer to the general instructions. Here you can also find out, for example, what you need to pay attention to when measuring.

Each measurement starts with a short orientation pan for your smartphone. Show your device a little of the construction site by letting it capture a few visual anchors in the surroundings.

You can then start surveying. Use the big colorful button at the bottom to place points in the real world using augmented reality. You can use the palette at the bottom right to change the color - and thus also the object. This allows you to measure several objects, pipes or volumes without a connection to each other in this one task.

When you are satisfied with your measurement, you can leave augmented reality by clicking on the tick in the top right-hand corner and continue to the calibration sketch.

    We have a digital sketch!

Without pen and paper, you now have your first digital measurement sketch on your smartphone.

Depending on what you have measured - and in which colors - your sketch will of course differ. In our example, you can see a measured area in red. Its area is also shown directly in red. In blue and green you can see two lines. The thick dots are the survey points. You can also click on these to obtain further information about the points and to carry out your orthogonal dimensioning.

You can control the view of your dimensioning sketch using standard gestures. You can rotate it, zoom in or out with two fingers and more. Just try out what you can do - of course, this won't damage your sketch itself. The data remains yours as long as you do not click on the arrow at the top left and leave the sketch without saving.

    Orthogonal dimensioning

The dimensioning sketch still looks quite simple. Let's make it more technical! You now need to define a zero point and a vanishing point in your sketch. To do this, click on one of your points and an overview of it will open.

At the top you will see the local coordinates of the point. This is followed by a time stamp indicating when you recorded the point .In the licensed version of Vaira, the “Assigned objects” field allows you to add components, service items or other list objects directly to the point. No lists are available in the free version.

Good to know: In the licensed version of Vaira, you can create your own directories and lists. Comprehensive lists can also be transferred to your processes via CSV in the licensed version. This means that everyone on the construction site always has up-to-date and complete data to hand and documentation is made much easier and faster. QR and barcode scans can also be used for recording in the license version.

Below this field you can see the type of point. By default, each point starts as “Nothing”. Here you can now assign your point to be the “zero point”. At the bottom of the screenshot you can see a photo reference. However, this is not available in the free version. It is automatically taken for each measurement point and is used for quality assurance and the traceability of measurements.

Click on the grayed-out area above the information window to close the information window for the point.

Now click on another point that you want to make a “vanishing point”.

As soon as you have defined the zero point and the vanishing point, Vaira automatically creates the orthogonal dimensioning in your measurement sketch.

    Saving the measurement

If you click on the floppy disk icon at the top, you can save your measurement. You still have the option of giving the measurement a name and a description.

When you click on “Save”, you will return to the inside of your task with the four fields.

We are back in the task

Here, the measurement field has now saved your measurement. If you click on the field, you can open your measurement sketch again for viewing. If you click on the triangle symbol on the right, you can also create another measurement in the same field.

Once you have made all your entries, you can save them by clicking the “Save” button at the bottom right. You will then be taken back to your task overview.

    Our documentation synchronized

Clicking on “Save” saves the data in your Vaira app. At the same time, the data is also synchronized with the Vaira platform if you have an internet connection. You can recognize this by the “grey clock” symbol.

This synchronization may take a while if you have a large amount of data - for example, due to extensive surveys or many photos. However, Vaira also synchronizes the data in the background. This means that you do not have to wait in this view until the data is synchronized. As soon as you see a green tick here, your data is also available to all other process participants in their Vaira app and in Vaira Office.

When the green tick indicates that all data has been synchronized, you can click on “Complete” at the bottom right of the tile.

Congratulations! You have now successfully completed your first free measurement with Vaira. 🚀
